Number Sense Team Makes History at

Dr. Javier Saenz Middle School

For the first time since the establishment of Dr. Javier Saenz Middle School, a team of 22 students will be representing the campus at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Academic State Meet. The number sense competition entails students completing a ten-minute, 80 question mental math test. The only way students are successful in this test is by developing and practicing mental math shortcuts. This begs the question, how could Dr. Saenz accumulate so many state qualifiers in such a challenging event? The answer lies in the intense and dedicated practices held by former Number Sense state champion, Mr. Armando Villarreal. Since the beginning of the school year, students have been persistent in practicing the methods taught by Mr. Villarreal and have made every possible effort to mimic his routines and question his way of solving problems. After a full year of having weekly practices, sacrificing Saturdays for competition, and completing a countless amount of practice tests, the team is ready to present their skills at the upcoming state event in which they hope to earn a placing spot at the state level. “We are excited to join the kids on their journey and have confidence they will make us even more proud” expressed Mrs. Diana Treviño-Barrientos, Dr. Saenz’ UIL co-coordinator. “It is an experience unlike any other from which they’ll likely learn from and cherish in the future”. The number sense team has already been named Regional Champions two years in a row and have consistently received the highest Number Sense scores throughout the La Joya ISD school district as well. There is no doubt that the dedication from both coaches and students has led this team to the accomplishments it has achieved. The state meet is scheduled to take place in San Antonio, Texas on April 21, 2018. Dr. Saenz Middle School students and staff anxiously await the state meet’s arrival and hope to continue to celebrate the dedication and success of their students.
