La Joya, TX - Before a meal ever reaches a student’s tray, there is an entire operation working behind the scenes to prepare it safely, efficiently, and on time. This school year, that work is getting a major boost at six La Joya ISD campuses following the completion of nearly $600,000 in commercial kitchen upgrades designed to strengthen the way thousands of student meals are prepared and served.

La Joya ISD has completed a $588,554 kitchen modernization project at Elodia R. Chapa Elementary School, Sam Fordyce Elementary School, Lorenzo De Zavala Middle School, Diaz-Villarreal Elementary School, Henry B. Gonzalez Elementary School, and JFK Elementary School, replacing aging equipment with modern commercial-grade appliances built to meet the demands of school meal service.

The improvements bring new convection ovens, tilting skillets and braising pans, pass-through refrigerators, heated cabinets, and food holding and transport equipment into campus kitchens. Together, the upgrades give La Joya ISD’s Child Nutrition Services staff greater capacity and more reliable tools to prepare, store, hold, and serve meals while supporting strong food safety practices.

“For our students, a school meal may simply look like breakfast or lunch, but there is a tremendous amount of preparation, coordination, and care that happens behind the scenes to make sure that meal is ready for them,” said Luis Pastor, Director of Child Nutrition Services for La Joya ISD.  “These upgrades give our cafeteria teams the tools they need to work more efficiently and consistently while maintaining the high standards of quality and food safety our students deserve. When our kitchens operate at their best, we are better equipped to serve our students at our best.”

The project represents an investment in an essential part of the student experience. For many students, the cafeteria is an important part of the school day, providing access to nutritious meals that help fuel learning, participation, and overall well-being.

Modernizing the kitchens also addresses the operational demands of preparing meals at scale. New convection ovens and tilting skillets increase cooking capacity and provide cafeteria teams with greater flexibility in food preparation, while pass-through refrigerators and heated cabinets help maintain appropriate temperatures and improve the movement of food from preparation to service.

The completed investment by campus includes:

  • Chapa Elementary School – $86,420

  • Fordyce Elementary School – $97,055

  • Zavala Middle School – $103,916

  • Diaz-Villarreal Elementary School – $95,132

  • Gonzalez Elementary School – $82,900

  • JFK Elementary School – $103,916

An additional $19,215 supported installation and project services, including equipment delivery, assembly and installation, electrical and utility connections, startup and operational testing, and the removal and disposal of existing equipment.

The improvements support La Joya ISD’s Achieving Excellence Together: 2030 Strategic Plan, particularly Priority 5: Operational Excellence & Financial Stability, through strategic investment in infrastructure that improves district operations and equips employees with the resources necessary to serve students effectively - because fueling student success starts long before the first bite.
